BP Premier was developed to assist doctors, healthcare professionals and medical practitioners to be able to meet the ever-growing demands of the medical healthcare system through quality healthcare facilities. This broadly includes maintenance of medical records, transmission of information safely and securely and provision of legible prescriptions.

The BP Premier specialists at Winterwind have worked towards integrating this software to an existing web application called Oqea for Clinical Excellence. BP Premier utilizes Microsoft SQL Server as its main database and is built for data integration. We made this integration possible by developing our own middleware application. The purpose of this middleware application was to extract data from BP Premier, transform it and load its finalized format to Oqea (ETL). We built our own APIs for BP Premier and Oqea for this middleware app to consume and complete the process.
The middleware app is composed of different jobs that can be run on schedule. These jobs consist of patient and appointment modules. Patient Jobs have actions relating to inserting, updating and deleting patient records while Appointment Jobs serve to act on appointment related actions such as inserting, updating and deleting appointment records.
The data transformation in this process works on cleaning the data extracted and changing it to a format which is compatible in Oqea. In these jobs, we make sure that every data is synced from BP Premier to Oqea and vice versa, therefore we created two separate functions in order to insert patient records to both apps. Furthermore, we made sure that when a patient changes their record in the BP Premier App, it will automatically be updated in Oqea. On the other hand, we also ensured that when a doctor adds or makes any changes to an appointment schedule with their patients using the BP Premier App, it will also be automatically synced to Oqea.
When a provider deletes a user like a doctor or a nurse using Oqea App it will be automatically deleted in BP Premier and vice versa. The same case follows in the situation where a doctor has deleted a patient or appointment in Oqea. BP Premier also has a function that will check if a patient or an appointment already exists in BP Premier or Oqea to ensure that there is no duplication of data.
The default schedule that our team has set for these jobs is to run every hour to automatically sync all the records periodically. The middleware app is built using Laravel with Cron Job. Our team of professionals has also created two sets of APIs for BP Premier and Oqea: the first set is built in CodeIgniter and the second set is built in Laravel together with the middleware. The purpose of this integration is to extract the patient and appointment records from BP Premier, display and use it in Oqea’s web application.
